Within the cycle “Climate warming: Energy solutions from today for tomorrow” organized by the “Residencia d’Investigadors”, the CSIC and the “Fundació Catalana per la Recerca i la Innovació”, Dr. Xavier Jordà from the PDS Group gave the talk entitled “Industrial electrification and decarbonization in 2050”. The electrification of industrial processes can be a valuable tool to reduce CO2 emissions from the industry, allowing the substitution of processes based on the combustion of fossil resources by others based on electrical energy from renewable sources. This progressive electrification is possible thanks to facilitating technologies, one of the most relevant being power electronics. Electronic power circuits allow the different elements of the chain of generation, distribution, storage and use of electrical energy to be efficiently interconnected and managed, and are based on semiconductor devices (chips) capable of withstanding very high voltages and conducting high currents. currents. In this talk, a vision of the current state of this technology was shown, omnipresent and with a great future, but often unknown.
